WPL 2024: Delhi Capitals Secure Top Spot with a 25-Run Victory Over Gujarat Giants

Delhi Capitals, who are now rooted at the bottom of the five-team Women’s Premier League (WPL) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, made it even worse for the winless Gujarat Giants on Sunday. The team captained by Meg Lanning won by 25 runs to take the top spot in the points table, leaving GG empty-handed after four straight losses.

Opening the bat for DC, Lanning hit a 41-ball 55 (6×4, 1×6) to push the runners-up from the previous edition to 163/8. Meghna Singh, a pacer from Gujarat, claimed three of the first four wickets (4/37), but her team still had a difficult target to pursue. GG bowled well compared to earlier games, but they were put on the back foot by dropped catches. As they pursued the objective, they were limited to 138/8.

Ashleigh Gardener (40 – 31b, 5×4, 1×6) of Australia did give GG some hope in the chase, but Jess Jonassen, a left-arm spinner, ended her stay at the wicket when Taniya Bhatia stumped her.

The left-arm spinner Jonassen (3/22) showed her mettle in T20, making the most of her spell with three vital wickets. The opportunity to tie the game was missed by the GG batters. Radha Yadav, a left-arm spinner, also took 3/20 after weaving a web over GG hitters.

Captain Beth Mooney would have hoped that her bowlers would limit DC if she had decided to bowl. Meghna made an impression by taking out Lanning, Alice Capsey (27), and Shafali Verma (13). Leading from the front, Kathryn Bryce dropped the DC captain, who might have been out on 30 off spinner Mannat Kashyap’s bowling. DC’s innings gained momentum thanks to 17-ball 27 from Capsey and a 12-ball 20 from Annabel Sutherland.
