Unraveling the Mumbai Indians Captaincy Conundrum: Rohit Sharma vs Hardik Pandya Ahead of IPL 2024

Three months have passed since the Mumbai Indians formally revealed their decision to bench veteran and inspirational skipper Rohit Sharma in favor of younger player Hardik Pandya. No one doubted that Pandya would replace India’s all-format captain as it became apparent that he would be moved from the Gujarat Titans, whom he led to the title on their IPL debut in 2022 and the final the following year, to the five-time champions. The fans and maybe Rohit himself may not have been too fond of this shift, even though, to his immense credit, he has remained silent with dignity. More than the move itself, Rohit’s wide following has been infuriated by the way he was replaced. Their anger has been focused on Pandya as well as the team and head coach Mark Boucher, possibly unfairly.

This will be the first time an Indian captain has played under a different skipper regularly when MI kicks off their season, ironically enough, in Ahmedabad against Pandya’s former team. As the players are quick to remind us whenever possible, they are all “professionals,” so rationally, that shouldn’t have an impact on the team’s performance. Though there will inevitably be boiling undercurrents, how maturely all parties handle these difficult situations will determine the kind of season Mumbai experiences over the coming few months. Since suffering an ankle injury during a World Cup match against Bangladesh in Pune during the third week of October, Pandya has not participated in any competitive cricket matches. He has only played in the Mumbai DY Patil T20 tournament for his employers. Although he freely acknowledges that he has been bowling well since January and will play his role as the team’s premier all-around player, what will be of far more interest is how he brings Rohit along.

Pandya was all fired up about his friendship with Rohit on Monday, saying he will always have the older man’s “hand on my shoulder.” That might not be too far from the truth. For all the anxiety he may harbor—or perhaps none at all? It’s difficult to observe Rohit deviating from his inherent quality of being a great team player, as he has demonstrated. If he has any complaints, they won’t be about Pandya. Pandya was well within his rights to demand that his return to his original club come with the leadership suffix if the organization pursued the wayward son and intended to reclaim his services before the next major auction. After all, Pandya has not only led India to success in the IPL but also expertly in white-ball cricket. Had he not had the ankle injury in October, he may have been the clear favorite to lead his country in the T20 World Cup this summer.

Given that he had taken over a faltering team mid-season more than ten years earlier, in 2013, and orchestrated an inspiring comeback that resulted in their first title, Rohit’s disappointment must originate from being almost arbitrarily freed of the duty. It was the first of five magnificent campaigns, all too bearing the Rohit imprint of leadership, authority, tactical skill, and superb man-management. The way the different jigsaw pieces fit together perfectly was not a coincidental development. Along with leading title runs, Rohit was instrumental in identifying and developing exceptional talent, including Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah. Who can blame him if he believes he is worthy of more than a simple “thank you”?

However, this shift was unavoidable from the perspective of the franchise. Given Rohit’s background, reputation, and status, it could have been handled more delicately, but emotion has rarely found a place in franchise or club sports. Six weeks from now, Rohit will be 37 years old, and Pandya, at 30, clearly has a lot more cricket left in him—that is, provided he can avoid the numerous injuries that have persistently plagued him for years. The IPL is about developing brands just as much as the sport itself, and in Pandya, MI, they see the perfect vehicle around which they can center their push going forward. From a marketing and cricket perspective, their reasoning is impeccable. But more often than not, it’s the way it’s implemented that needs improvement. Conspiracy theories and hatchets need not be addressed. Because of their mutual dependence on both the country and the franchise, it is doubtful that the events of the past three months will cause a rift between the Indian captain and the incoming MI head.
