Spanish Football President Luis Rubiales Resigns Amid Women’s World Cup Kiss Controversy
As a result of a scandal that clouded Spain’s first-ever Women’s World Cup victory, the president of the Spanish football federation, Luis Rubiales, resigned from his position. Rubiales had kissed a player on the lips without getting her permission.
When Rubiales kissed Jenni Hermoso during the internationally televised awards ceremony after Spain defeated England to win the title on August 20 in Sydney, Australia, he became the centre of a scandal that spread well beyond the limits of Spain and the world of sports.
In a message published on X, now known as Twitter, on Sunday, Rubiales declared, “It is apparent that I cannot return to the office after my fast suspension by FIFA and the rest of the charges building against me.
FIFA had already temporarily suspended him from his position due to his behaviour during the final, but he maintained his defiance and hostility towards those who criticised him even after the world governing body of football launched a disciplinary case.
Then, two days after Hermoso formally accused Rubiales of sexual assault, the most grave threat yet to him materialised when Spanish state prosecutors charged him of coercion and sexual assault following the unwanted kiss on Friday.
Rubiales, once the most influential figure in Spanish football, brought about his own downfall with a kiss that he said was offered in a “moment of jubilation” and was comparable to one he “would have given his daughters.” The vast majority of Spaniards vehemently disapproved and considered it as an abuse of power and a sexist behaviour, including fans, players, and politicians.
Spain’s Secretary of State for Sport, Victor Francos, told Cadena SER radio, “The former president of the Spanish football federation has done what he had to do.” I believe he did as virtually the entire Spanish society had requested.
As a result of the reputational damage the scandal could do to Spain’s joint candidature with Portugal, Morocco, and potentially Ukraine to host the 2030 men’s World Cup, Rubiales claimed he also resigned as the vice president of UEFA.
When Rubiales was suspended on August 26, Pedro Rocha took over as the interim president of the Spanish federation, and Rubiales claimed that Rocha was informed of his resignation late Sunday night. In a statement, the Spanish federation acknowledged Rubiales’ resignation and stated that it will adhere to its bylaws and hold a presidential election.
Also on Sunday, in response to a query from British talk show host Piers Morgan on TalkTV, Rubiales declared, “I am going to (resign), I cannot continue my work.” Sunday’s publication of the show’s clips coincided with the appearance of Rubiales’ social media post.
In a conversation with his father, daughters, and other close friends, Rubiales said, “Luis, you now have to focus on your dignity and to continue your life, because if you don’t, probably you are going to harm people you love, and the sport you love.” Rubiales said this to Morgan.
“I have to do it now, given the circumstances.” In light of the rapid backlash against him for his actions during the final, which included a sexual gesture of grasping his crotch with Spain’s Queen Letizia and her teenage daughter, Princess Sofa, nearby in the stands, Rubiales had been predicted to resign two weeks prior.
Just one day later, FIFA temporarily suspended him, the Spanish government filed a request to have him declared ineligible to hold office, and Hermoso accused him of sexual assault.

Politicians in Spain, as well as its soccer leagues, clubs, players, and fans, had harsh words to say about Rubiales’ conduct at one of soccer’s finest international competitions. The local favorite had an aggressive opening round and got Roshibina down beautifully in an effort to get her opponent off the mat.

In the men’s 10m air pistol team competition on Day 5 of the current Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, India won gold. The shooting squad, which included Sarabjot Singh, Arjun Singh Cheema, and Shiva Narwal, had to pull off an amazing comeback to win. Table tennis: Zhe Yu, Clarence Chew, and Jian Zeng of China defeat Sathiyan Gnanasekaran and Manika Batra in the mixed doubles team competition.
In the round of 16 of the mixed doubles competition, Thailand’s Phakpoom Sanguansin and Orawan Paranang defeat Harmeet Rajul Desai and Sreeja Akula. In the women’s singles round of 32, Manika Batra defeats Nabita Shrestha of Nepal 4-0.
