BCCI Introduces Smart Replay System for IPL 2024: Enhancing DRS Process and TV Umpire Efficiency

A new Smart Replay System will be introduced in the 2018 Indian Premier League (IPL) season to improve decision-making effectiveness and expedite the procedure. According to an ESPNcricinfo report, this system will have eight Hawk-Eye high-speed cameras positioned all around the field. Alongside the TV umpire, two Hawk-Eye operators will be positioned to give real-time images for prompt analysis. In contrast to the previous configuration, the new system does away with the TV broadcast director’s position as a go-between for the Hawk-Eye operators and the third umpire. Rather than going through a middleman, the TV umpire will receive visuals directly from the operators, giving them access to a greater variety of images, including split-screen views.

This development makes it possible to conduct a more thorough analysis. For example, broadcasters can now record important events, like an outfielder’s mid-air grab, simultaneously with footage of their hands and feet. Umpires will have improved clarity and a variety of perspectives thanks to the Smart Replay System when evaluating other situations, such as caught behinds, leg-before-wicket calls, stumpings, and low catches. A two-day course was recently arranged by the BCCI for a group of umpires who will be using this method throughout the IPL. These officials include both Indian and foreign authorities. The board’s efforts to use contemporary technology in cricket officiating are in line with this aim. It is noteworthy that the England and Wales Cricket Board tested a similar referral system during the Hundred competition as well.

How will the Smart Review System work?

Let us use an example to help you better grasp how the technology will function. Suppose a fielder tosses the ball towards the stumps, only for it to be overthrown and end up on a boundary. We can now tell if the batters crossed each other at the time of the toss, thanks to the new Smart Replay System. How? Well, the system takes pictures of the exact time the fielder releases the ball as well as the positions of the hitters using high-speed cameras positioned all around the field. The TV umpire is subsequently given this information, which enables more precise decision-making. It’s similar to being able to see more clearly what transpired on the pitch; the 2019 World Cup final serves as an example, when Ben Stokes lunged for a second run and the ball bounced off his bat. It used to be impossible to do this since the broadcast cameras couldn’t merge these pictures, but with the Smart Replay System, it’s now possible thanks to improved visuals that lead to more equitable decisions.

Smart Replay System in DRS

If you watch cricket regularly, you’ve probably heard the TV umpire say, “TV umpire to director, we have a review for…” at the start of each DRS review. That won’t be necessary going forward, though. The TV umpire will receive direct visuals from the operator and won’t need the director to relay the replays because the Smart Replay System will make the director’s function unnecessary.
