Shreyas Iyer’s Fitness Worries Loom Over India’s ODI World Cup Preparations

Shreyas Iyer's injury and World Cup prospects

India has been hampered by injury concerns with less than three weeks to the start of their home ODI World Cup campaign, despite checking all the correct boxes on route to their perfectly timed Asia Cup title sweep in Colombo on Sunday. Earlier in the day, India’s head coach Rahul Dravid issued a warning to the squad, saying that any injuries this close to the competition “may cost them the World Cup,” while captain Rohit Sharma provided an update on both Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel. But while making a terrible comment regarding Iyer and his World Cup situation, batting legend Gautam Gambhir handed the team’s management a deadline.

Since suffering a lower back tension in March of this year, India’s No. 4 has been sidelined. Later, due to surgery, he missed the full IPL season in addition to the WTC final and the tour to the West Indies. After his activity, Iyer spent his days at Bengaluru’s Public Cricket Foundation (NCA), where he later partook in match reenactments and practice matches to exhibit his incentive for the Asia Cup and World Cup.

Iyer, notwithstanding, was simply ready to play in one game at Asia Cup prior to experiencing one more back fit that constrained him to pass on the remainder of the opposition.

Gambhir expressed his opinion that the India batter should be replaced in the World Cup team given his poor performance in the Asia Cup and India’s uncertainty over his form in a conversation with Star Sports before the game on Sunday. Gambhir was unimpressed by Iyer’s decision to sit out the final against Sri Lanka.

Shreyas Iyer's injury and World Cup prospects

It’s a worry. After being out for so long, you returned for the Asia Cup, played one match, and then again lost your fitness. After this, I doubt the team management will choose him for such a significant competition. Iyer won’t be traveling with the World Cup team and will be replaced, as you’ll see in the upcoming days. A World Cup should always be entered with healthy participants.Execution is something completely different. Imagine that you can’t find a substitute expecting a player is influenced by a fit or another condition. Likewise, in case Iyer hasn’t been strong during this resistance, it will be very much unfathomable for him to partake in the world Cup due to his sickness, and we wouldn’t really know his energy status. That was 7-8 months earlier, regardless of what his show, and he has quite recently played in one game from there on out. As a result, that is awful,he stated.

Gambhir continued by saying that the team management should instead inquire about Iyer’s recurring back injuries with the NCA.

If there are any concerns, he advised contacting the NCA because it is where he spent all of these months and where he also received a clearance. Perhaps they cleared him too fast, who knows?

After India’s victory against Sri Lanka earlier on Sunday, Rohit Sharma confessed that he was left off the starting lineup because he did not meet certain criteria.

Shreyas wasn’t able to play in this game since there were still requirements for him to meet. I believe he finished the majority of it today.. I ought to comment that this moment, he is looking great. However, he was already present when we arrived, is in good physical condition, and has put in a lot of time at the plate and in the field. We shouldn’t be concerned, in my opinion, the skipper added.

In their round of 16 encounter against Saudi Arabia on Thursday at the Huanglong Sports Center Stadium in Hangzhou, the People’s Republic of China, the Indian men’s football team was defeated 2-0, eliminating them from the Asian Games 2023.

Both Saudi Arabia goals were scored by Mohammed Khalil Marran (51 and 57 seconds).

FIFA Rankings: India at 102, Saudi Arabia at 57

India is ranked 102nd in the world in the FIFA senior men’s football rankings, whereas Saudi Arabia is ranked 57th. However, the men’s football competitions at the Asian Games are under-23 affairs, with a maximum of three players over the age limit permitted for each side.

Sunil Chhetri and company succumbed to China 5-1 in the opening round before defeating Bangladesh 1-0 and holding Myanmar to a 1-1 draw en route to the knockout rounds. India secured a place in the pre-quarterfinals by finishing second in Pool A behind China.

Saudi Arabia had two victories and a draw as they placed second in Pool B, just behind Iran.

Football

The Indian men’s football team started in a 4-4-2 shape and defended deeply while wearing its characteristic blue uniform. In the meantime, Saudi Arabia played long balls into the Indian half to exert pressure on the Indian defense. The seasoned Sandesh Jinghan-led Indian defense stood its ground to repel the Saudi forwards.

While Saudi Arabia had the majority of the possession, India used counterattacks to create two good chances just before the 15-minute mark.

Highlights from India vs. Saudi Arabia Match

Despite winning possession of the ball in the other team’s half, Sunil Chhetri’s effort was blocked by the Saudi goalkeeper.

A few minutes later, the Indian captain delivered a free-kick that found Sandesh Jhingan, but the defender’s header was cleared off the goal line.

Saudi Arabia increased the stakes following the two let-offs. Musab Al-Juwayr nearly gave the Green Falcons,& the first goal when his right-footed shot beat Indian goalkeeper Dheeraj but hit the post.

It required some desperate defending by the Indian backline to stop Saudi Arabia from scoring in the Indian half.

Zakaria Hawsawi of Saudi Arabia surged into the Indian half in the final seconds of the first half and attempted to score, but Sandesh Jinghan made a crucial block.
Both teams went into halftime without scoring.

Football

India struggled to keep up as Saudi Arabia picked up the pace in the second half. Mohammed Khalil Marran successfully headed a cross past Indian goalkeeper Dheeraj Singh to give Saudi Arabia the lead after five minutes of nonstop pressure.
