India Exit Asian Games 2023 Football After Defeat to Saudi Arabia

In Hangzhou 2023, the Indian men’s football squad was eliminated in the round of 16. The female team was unable to move past the group stage.

In their round of 16 encounter against Saudi Arabia on Thursday at the Huanglong Sports Center Stadium in Hangzhou, the People’s Republic of China, the Indian men’s football team was defeated 2-0, eliminating them from the Asian Games 2023.

India is ranked 102nd in the world in the FIFA senior men’s football rankings, whereas Saudi Arabia is ranked 57th. However, the men’s football competitions at the Asian Games are under-23 affairs, with a maximum of three players over the age limit permitted for each side. 

Sunil Chhetri and company succumbed to China 5-1 in the opening round before defeating Bangladesh 1-0 and holding Myanmar to a 1-1 draw en route to the knockout rounds. India secured a place in the pre-quarterfinals by finishing second in Pool A behind China.

Saudi Arabia had two victories and a draw as they placed second in Pool B, just behind Iran.

The Indian men’s football team started in a 4-4-2 shape and defended deeply while wearing its characteristic blue uniform. In the meantime, Saudi Arabia played long balls into the Indian half to exert pressure on the Indian defense. The seasoned Sandesh Jinghan-led Indian defense stood its ground to repel the Saudi forwards.

While Saudi Arabia had the majority of the possession, India used counterattacks to create two good chances just before the 15-minute mark.

Both teams went into halftime without scoring.

Football

India struggled to keep up as Saudi Arabia picked up the pace in the second half. Mohammed Khalil Marran successfully headed a cross past Indian goalkeeper Dheeraj Singh to give Saudi Arabia the lead after five minutes of nonstop pressure.

Mohammed Khalil Marran extended the Saudi team’s lead a few minutes later after returning to the play.

After scoring the second goal, the Saudi Arabian squad easily maintained control of the match and secured the victory to advance to the round of eight.

The women’s squad did not go past the group stage, and with the men’s team’s elimination, India’s football campaign in Hangzhou 2023 is now over.

At the Asian Games in 1951 and 1962, the Indian football team won the gold medal on both occasions.

The Indian squad last advanced to the round of 16 in 2010, where they were defeated 5-0 by Japan.

With a gold medal win in the men’s 10m air pistol team competition and two shooters qualifying for the individual finals, India continued its winning streak at the Asian Games . India won its fourth gold medal from the shooting ranges when the trio of Sarabjot Singh, Arjun Singh Cheema, and Shiva Narwal narrowly defeated the Chinese team to capture the top podium spot. In the women’s 60kg wushu sanda final, India’s Naorem Roshibina Devi finished with a silver medal after losing 0-2 to local heavyweight Wu Xiaowei.

The Indian struggled against Wu Xiaowei, the current winners in the division, which allowed the Chinese to get off to a solid start. Following two rounds, Wu was crowned the victor by the judges. The local favorite had an aggressive opening round and got Roshibina down beautifully in an effort to get her opponent off the mat.
