Toronto: Revolutionary Robot with Artificial Memory Helps Find Lost Objects

Researchers from the University of Waterloo in Canada have developed a groundbreaking robot equipped with artificial memory to assist in locating misplaced items. This development has the potential to greatly benefit individuals, especially those with dementia.

Dr. Ali Ayub, a postdoctoral researcher at the university’s department of electrical and computer engineering, was enthused about the long-term effects of this breakthrough. According to him, “A user can be involved not just with a companion robot but a personalised companion robot that can give them more independence.”

The team set out to develop a solution to solve the issues encountered by persons who regularly forget the locations of ordinary things in light of the rising number of people affected by dementia. Their amnesia reduces their quality of life and adds to the responsibilities carers already bear.

By leveraging artificial intelligence, the engineers developed a novel artificial memory system within a companion robot. The robot, equipped with a camera for environmental perception, was programmed to detect, track, and log specific objects through video footage using an object-detection algorithm.

The robot records the time and date when items enter or leave its range of vision and has the capacity to discriminate between them. A user-friendly graphical interface was created to enable interaction and allow users to pick and monitor particular objects. Users can use a smartphone app or computer to search for objects by entering their names.

When queried, the robot provides information about the last observed time and location of the requested object, thanks to its comprehensive memory log.

Extensive testing has demonstrated the system’s high accuracy. Although individuals with dementia might initially find the technology challenging, caregivers can easily utilize it on their behalf.

To further hone the system’s capabilities, the research team intends to undertake user trials with both those without impairments and those who have dementia.

At the 2023 ACM/IEEE International Conference on Human-Robot Interaction, the ground-breaking work was presented.

WhatsApp Tests Meta AI Chatbot in India and Other Markets

WhatsApp has announced that it is testing its huge language model-powered chatbot, Meta AI, with users in India and a few other areas. The goal of this initiative is to leverage WhatsApp’s massive user base to strengthen its AI products.

The AI chatbot is being tested by the internet giant in a few locations, including the US.

A representative for Meta stated in a statement on Friday that “we’re testing a range of our generative AI-powered experiences publicly in a limited capacity.” The experiences are currently in different stages of development.

India is the largest market for the instant messaging application WhatsApp, with over 500 million users.
