Ravichandran Ashwin Retains Top Position in Bowlers’ Rankings; Joe Root Ousts Labuschagne to Become World No. 1 Batter.

Ravichandran Ashwin

The top-ranked bowler in the ICC Test rankings, Ravichandran Ashwin of India, has maintained his position at the top, while Joe Root of England has supplanted Marnus Labuschagne of Australia to claim the top spot among batters.

James Anderson of England sits second in the world rankings with 829 points, ahead of Ashwin, who was not selected for the World Test Championship final against Australia earlier this month in London. With no change in their rankings, Indian bowlers Jasprit Bumrah (772) and Ravindra Jadeja (765) held the eighth and ninth spots, respectively.

While Ajinkya Rahane and Shreyas Iyer, who have been out of the game for some time, moved up one spot each to take the 36th and 37th slots, respectively, Cheteshwar Pujara remained in 25th place. The only other Indian to appear in the top 10 is wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, who occupies the tenth place. At the top of the batters’ rankings, where Root rose five ranks to dethrone Labuschagne, the most significant change happened.

A day after Australia defeated England by two wickets in a thrilling conclusion to win the Edgbaston Test and take a 1-0 series lead.
Following their loss in the first Ashes Test, England’s first innings total of 393 for eight, in which Root scored an unbeaten 118, was declared. However, Labuschagne did not make an impact with the bat in either innings.

Ravichandran Ashwin
Root managed scores of 118 not out and 46 in a losing effort during the first Ashes Test in Birmingham, and those superb individual performances saw the 32-year-old.

Just 26 rating points now separate the top six players in what is one of the closest competitions seen in recent memory. In the race to become the top Test batter, Steve Smith (down four spots to sixth) and Travis Head (down one spot to fourth) both suffered setbacksPat Cummins of Australia dropped to third place among bowlers because Kagiso Rabada of South Africa outscored him (824 points).

To bowl the last over will be Starc. OUT! Starc goes wide outside off and Pooran gets a nick to the keeper on the first ball of the over.

De Kock exits the Impact and is replaced by Arshad Khan. QUARTER! Top edge on the pull, which extends past the keeper to the boundary. Just beyond the arc, Arshad swerves and fails. Arshad heaves and misses once more as he swings in. Now that the length has returned, Krunal swivels, pulls, and misses. For a single, it comes off his thigh pad.

OUT! With the last delivery of the innings, Arshad Khan is out of the game.

Rana fails to bowl. A slower one outside to Pooran, which is represented by a dot ball. This is referred to as being too wide outside. Once more, pace off while angling away outside. It crosses the short-third for a boundary as Pooran slashes at it forcefully. Once more, the outside off is too wide; an additional run to Lucknow. For LSG, that means 150 up in 18.2 overs. QUARTER! Short, pulled by Pooran, who gains a leading edge, and that eventually trickles away for a boundary because the fielder is inside the circle. Pooran fails to connect on this one as it is wide and full outside off. Since he thinks this is a wide, he goes up for review. The third umpire has determined that was a fair delivery.
