India Bridges Global Tech Divide

Modi added that India thinks the divide between the Global North and the Global South shouldn’t grow as a result of new technology. Arindam Bagchi, a spokesman for the ministry of external affairs, had earlier stated that Modi will chair the summit’s maiden session, which would take place virtually.

According to the MEA, India has worked hard during its G20 Presidency to ensure that the concerns of the Global South receive the attention they require and that their goals are taken into consideration while creating solutions for the world’s most pressing crises.

Enforcement Directorate Officer Nabbed in Tamil Nadu

On Friday, the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) announced that an Enforcement Directorate officer had been arrested for allegedly soliciting and accepting a bribe of Rs 20 lakh from a government employee.

Following his apprehension in Dindigul, a group of DVAC representatives conducted ‘enquiries’ at the Madurai sub-zone ED office, while state police officers provided security outside the central government building.

Ankit Tiwari, who was detained, was named in a DVAC press statement as “serving as an Enforcement Officer in the Madurai Enforcement Department office of the Union Government.”

He spoke with a Dindigul government employee in October and disclosed that he had a Vigilance case filed against him in that area, but it had “already disposed off.”

According to the statement, Tiwari “informed the employee that instructions had been received from the Prime Minister’s Office to conduct an enquiry” and requested that the government worker show up to the ED office in Madurai on October 30.

The man went to Madurai, where DVAC claimed Tiwari demanded payment of Rs 3 crore to keep the case out of court.

He later claimed to have communicated with his superiors and to have accepted to accept a bribe of Rs 51 lakh at their request. The aforementioned employee had paid him Rs 20 lakh as the first installment of bribes on November 1. The announcement stated that Tiwari later threatened the employee on multiple times with terrible consequences until he paid the whole amount of Rs 51 lakh through WhatsApp calls and text messages.

COP28 Leaders Back Green Initiative

A number of world leaders backed Narendra Modi’s introduction of the Green Credit Initiative during the COP28 conference.

On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while attending the World Climate Action Summit of the Conference of Parties-28 (COP28 summit) in Dubai, announced the Green Credit Initiative, capping off his full day visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The website for the Green Credits Programme was launched during the COP28 World Climate Action Summit in Dubai by Sweden’s Ulf Kristersson, Mozambique’s prime minister Filipe Jacinto Nyusi, and European Council President Modi.

COP28

The prime minister spoke on how climate change is affecting the Global South during COP28, saying, “We need to start thinking about the environment in the same way that we think about our health card in life.” We’ll have to investigate our options for raising Earth’s Health Card’s rating. I think this is what Green Credit is.”

What is Green Credit Initiative

On October 13, 2023, the Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change unveiled the Green Credit Initiative for the first time. The initiative’s two main goals are afforestation and water conservation.

According to the environment ministry, the project is a “market-based mechanism designed to incentivize voluntary environmental actions across diverse sectors by various stakeholders like individuals, communities, private sector industries, and companies.”

COP28

Green credits, which will be recognized as traded commodities under this program, will be allocated to particular environmental initiatives. On domestic market systems, these green credits will be able to be sold.

This effort’s main goal is to encourage corporate and private enterprises to take part in voluntary environmental projects such water conservation, waste management, sustainable agriculture, and tree planting in order to help the nation’s climate-related problems.
