Moonlighting In The Indian It industry Facts, Myths And The Way Forward

Executive Summary

The practise of moonlighting, or doing a second job or side gig in addition to one’s principal job, has recently been the subject of discussion. Moonlighting, according to Wipro CEO Rishad Premji, is “cheating and unacceptable,” and Wipro immediately fired over 300 employees who were “caught moonlighting.” The chairman of Tata Sons, N. Chandrasekaran, recently stated, “We actively discourage moonlighting because it can compromise the quality of work we deliver and pose a security risk.”

Moonlighting Survey by Cutshort

Cutshort’s goal is to help modern professionals advance their careers, therefore we ran a poll to learn more about the opinions and experiences of IT professionals who moonlight. More than 3,000 computer workers with a range of job experience, including those with 0–1 years of experience, 1-3 years of experience, and 3–7 years of experience, answered the poll.

Key Findings

These were some key insights that were revealed by the survey:

  • Only 22.91% of respondents reported to have moonlighted in the past or are moonlighting now, with 7.36% reporting that they are moonlighting right now.
  • Early in their careers, professionals are more likely to moonlight for reasons including learning and networking. When compared to those with 3 to 7 years of experience, it is significantly less prevalent; yet, between 7 and 10 years of experience, it grows once more, but this time for other factors.
  • Employers’ worries that employees who moonlight are less productive at their day jobs are probably unjustified because 75% of moonlighters reported to moonlight for fewer than 10 hours a week, and 31% claimed to moonlight for less than 4 hours a week.

Way Forward

We discuss the legal, moral, and other significant facets of moonlighting later in the paper. We also go through how businesses can deal with it. We advise businesses to base their moonlighting regulations on relevant statistics and research findings. We admonish them not to rely on isolated incidents and lower sample sizes that can present a false picture.

The act of moonlighting involves engaging in side businesses while holding down a full-time position. Discussions about this phenomenon have been prevalent in the tech sector, especially.

  • Moonlighting, according to Wipro CEO Rishad Premji, is “cheating and unacceptable.” After making this public announcement, Wipro fired around 300 employees who were also working other jobs.
  • The chairman of Tata Sons, N. Chandrasekaran, stated that “We actively discourage moonlighting because it can compromise the quality of the work we deliver and can be a security risk.” TCS further stated that, although being lenient with the employees that moonlight, they will not let it.

Survey And Methodology

We at Cutshort want to close the informational gap on this topic.
To learn more about computer professionals’ perspectives and experiences with moonlighting, we conducted a poll. The poll results provide us with a revealing view into the current situation of the industry and are both enlightening and thought-provoking. Our study clarifies factors such as why people work second jobs, its advantages and disadvantages, how it affects people’s skill development, how the workforce as a whole feels about it, and much more.

More than 3,000 tech professionals took part in our study, and 707 of them were currently moonlighting or had previously moonlighted. The responders had a wide range of professional backgrounds.

Key Insights On Moonlighting: What’s Real And What’s Hyped

The outcomes provided us with a window into the professional market’s situation at the time:

What proportion of the IT workforce works a second job?The moonlighting debate raises a number of problems, the first of which is: What proportion of the workforce moonlights? How many people are continuing? More importantly, is the number significant enough to warrant the major firms’ harsh responses to them?

Of the 3085 tech workers we polled, 707 (22.91%) stated that they moonlight either now or have moonlighted in the past. Just 227 of the 707 responders (7.36% of the total) are moonlighting at the moment.

Who Exactly Is Choosing Side Jobs?

According to the poll, moonlighting is most prevalent in the first three years of a profession. Nearly 31% of respondents with 0–1 years of experience had a second job. Moonlighting then becomes less common as experience level rises; it was least common for those with 3–7 years of experience.

However, there is a definite increase in moonlighting among employees with experience levels of 7 to 10 years and larger as the experience level crosses that threshold.

What are the motivations for moonlighting and how do they change with work experience:

Knowing why people pursue side jobs is the next unsolved aspect of the moonlighting debate. The most obvious reason for moonlighting, in principle, is to earn additional income. It appears to be the strongest motivation for giving up their hard-earned free time to work another job. Our research does, however, indicate a few alternative possibilities.

Learning and using new skills emerged as the other top reason for moonlighting, with 73.41% of respondents choosing it as either a primary or secondary reason. Earning extra money was a popular response for all experience levels, chosen as the “primary reason” by 45% of respondents.

Nearly 73.69% (521) of the 707 total respondents said they work fewer than 10 hours a week as a second job. 40% of people moonlight for fewer than 4 hours every day.

It’s likely that this time spent moonlighting would have been spent on other learning opportunities if moonlighting had not been an option, given that learning is one of the primary motivations for moonlighting. Therefore, there wouldn’t have been much time saved if moonlighting wasn’t an option.

The current status of the debate over moonlighting in the Indian IT sector and future directions

In the software industry, the debate around moonlighting has so far been incredibly diametrically opposed. Leaders in the tech industry have a split opinion about moonlighting. Moonlighting is cheating, plain and simple, according to Rishad Premji.

However, very few well-known corporate figures have come out in support of the contentious practise.
In regards to moonlighting, for example, Infosys co-founder Krish Gopalakrishnan stated, “As long as it doesn’t interfere with the employee’s performance or the interests of the company, we don’t see it as a problem.”

The Cutshort View

In India, moonlighting is not expressly forbidden by law. There are no regulations that specifically forbid people from working more than one job, provided they carry out their duties and commitments in each position.
However, some businesses may have regulations in place that restrict or forbid its employees from working a second job, particularly if it conflicts with their primary job responsibilities.

However, some businesses may have regulations in place that restrict or forbid its employees from working a second job, particularly if it conflicts with their primary job responsibilities.

Conflict of interest arising from an employee working for a competitor

Although it’s usual for employers to include a provision in the employee agreement forbidding the employee from working for a rival company, it’s not certain whether the Indian courts will uphold this clause.

Misuse of company resources and data breaches

Sometimes employees will work on the side using equipment and resources that are supplied by the corporation. The employee is placed in a morally ambiguous situation, and firm data is exposed to breaches and leaks as a result.

The Implications Of Moonlighting For Tech Companies

We thought it would be useful to know how the industry has formally responded to it thus far given the current heated arguments about moonlighting. In our study, 32.67% of the 707 moonlighters reported that their employers approve of the practise, whereas a comparable percentage of respondents reported that their employers lack a clear moonlighting policy.

A little more than 60% of respondents said their company’s policy on working is either unclear to them (32.81%) or they are unsure of it (27.16%).

How to Create a Moonlighting Policy at Your Company and Why You Should

The data shown above shows a severe lack of clarity on the parts of both employers and employees. Therefore, introducing a thorough moonlighting policy by primary employers is the most obvious (and currently accepted) answer to the moonlighting issue. The employer must be clear about what they require of their staff members and establish rules that will help keep things legal.

Analyse the needs and objectives of the company.

Analyse the policy’s goals and objectives in relation to the general aims and values of the business.\

Think about how it will affect performance

Establish policies for controlling these risks and take into account the potential effects that moonlighting may have on an employee’s productivity, health, and well-being.

What the Future Might Hold

The increasing demand for tech expertise, the expansion of remote employment alternatives, and the growth of the gig economy are all contributing to the increased prevalence of moonlighting in the technology sector. Moonlighting management presents businesses with the issue of balancing the needs and interests of the organisation and the personnel.

In India, especially after Covid, the practise of moonlighting is evolving. This idea may gain more traction in the future given the rise in popularity of work-from-home positions and start-up culture in recent years. Having stated that, the legality is dependent on the corporate policy, the type of employment, and other elements of the workplace.

This report should have made it easier for you to distinguish between actual facts and fictitious or anecdotal claims.
In today’s rapidly evolving professional environment, it’s critical to comprehend employee wants and motivations and match them with organisational needs in order to create the best solution that benefits all stakeholders.
