James Anderson became the first pacer in Test history to record 700 wickets for England to begin the day, but the jubilation soon faded. Exactly four hours, to be exact. Some would even argue for less since, once India’s spinners, led by Ravichandran Ashwin, put England five down after the lunch break on the third day of the fifth Test in Dharamsala, it was clear what was going to happen. India won the Test match by an innings and 64 runs in less than three days, taking the series 4-1. It took 48.1 overs to knock England out in their second innings. After the first Test, an Indian series win seemed dubious, much less with a 4-1 margin. Even though they gave up a 190-run advantage in the first inning, England’s bazballers turned history on its head by defeating India in Hyderabad in the opening game of the series.
Rishabh Pant and Mohammed Shami were absent from India. Virat Kohli was also absent from the series because of personal matters. Ankles kept giving way. KL Following a quadriceps injury in the opening test, Rahul was ruled out of the series. Because of a hamstring strain, Ravindra Jadeja was unable to participate in the second test. In the middle of the third Test, Ravichandran Ashwin had to return home to take care of his unwell mother. Ben Stokes’s wildly energetic captaincy was giving the impression that Rohit Sharma’s collected and composed manner was carefree, even lacking in ideas at times. Bairstow used his spin to his advantage, hitting three massive sixes off Ashwin on the onside before Kuldeep Yadav declared him leg-before wicket. Bairstow performed another boom-and-bust knock in the series. He spoke with Shubman Gill, who was stationed at first slip, for a short while and became distracted. After noon, Ashwin got rid of Ben Fokes to record the greatest five-wicket haul by an Indian ever—36. Then it was Jasprit Bumrah’s chance to perform a magic trick. With two thunderbolt bowls, he sent Mark Wood and Tom Hartley back. Jadeja put a stunning end to Shoaib Bashir’s stay. When he made a last-ditch effort to reach his century, Root was the last wicket to fall—the only batter from England who attempted to take his time and manipulate the situation.
