IPL 2024 Player Withdrawals and Replacements: Updated List of Changes in the Tournament

It’s less than a week until the 17th Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) kicks off, and fans are excited because elite cricket players from across the world will be arriving in India in advance of the highly anticipated T20 World Cup 2024 in June. But this season, a number of teams are without the services of important players. Notably, Mohammed Shami of India, the league’s top wicket-taker in the 2023 IPL, will miss play because of an injury.

Harry Brook, a strong middle-order English batter for the Delhi Capitals, has opted out due to a family tragedy, adding to the list of absentees. IPL clubs will need to reassess their plans in light of the absence of these well-known players. Here is a list of every player who has pulled out of the competition thus far:

Chennai Super Kings

Devon Conway: After having thumb surgery, the New Zealand hitter has been sidelined and will likely be out for eight weeks. No replacement has been announced by the team.

Delhi Capitals

Harry Brook: The England batter made it official on Wednesday that he will not be playing for the team all season long. Brook disclosed that he needed to be with his family during this trying period because his grandma passed away following a protracted illness. The DC has not yet announced Brook’s replacement.

Gujarat Titans

Mohammed Shami: The seasoned Indian pacer is noticeably absent from the Gujarat Titans roster. He hasn’t played since November’s 2023 World Cup final against Australia. The Gujarat Titans face a difficulty in finding a worthy replacement for the seasoned fast bowler as Shami had surgery in London, which has further delayed his return to action.

Kolkata Knight Riders

Jason Roy: With his withdrawal from the 2024 Indian Premier League due to personal issues, the English opener would be missed from the team’s batting order. Roy will be replaced by fellow Englishman Phil Salt, who is presently ranked second in the ICC T20 rankings.
Gus Atkinson: The withdrawal of English bowler Gus Atkinson from his first IPL season was another blow for the Kolkata Knight Riders. The English and Wales Cricket Board wanted to efficiently manage Atkinson’s workload, thus they took this decision. Atkinson was replaced by Dushmantha Chameera, a Sri Lankan.

Rajasthan Royals

Prasidh Krishna: The Karnataka bowler, who also played for India in T20Is last year, will miss the second straight season of the league. He had surgery in February to treat a quadriceps injury he had during the Ranji Trophy 2023–24 season, which is the reason for his absence.
