ICC Fines Shubman Gill for Social Media Post Criticizing Umpire Decision in WTC Final 2023

The WTC Final 2023 match between Australia and India at Kennington Oval, London concluded with a resounding victory for Australia, defeating Team India by a massive 209-run margin. However, this defeat was followed by a significant action taken by the International Cricket Council (ICC) against young opener Shubman Gill. The ICC has fined Gill, the talented batsman, for a specific incident that occurred during the match.

In the second innings of the WTC Final 2023, Shubman Gill was dismissed in an unusual manner, which drew criticism towards third umpire Richard Kettleborough. In response to his dismissal, Gill made an unconventional move by sharing a photo of the catch on his social media account, accompanied by an emoji that seemed to convey his disagreement with the umpire’s decision. Consequently, the ICC has imposed a fine on the young cricketer for breaching Article 2.7, which pertains to making public criticism or inappropriate comments related to incidents in international matches. Gill has been penalized 15 percent of his match fee.

It is worth noting that in addition to Gill’s fine, Team India has also been fined 100 percent of their match fee for a slow over rate during the WTC Final 2023.

Prior to the ICC’s decision, renowned commentator Ricky Ponting had predicted the possibility of a fine for Shubman Gill. During the commentary, Ponting remarked, “There could be some kind of fine or even suspension. It’s a direct hit on the umpire, and you can’t do that.”

Gill’s act of questioning the third umpire’s decision through his social media post has led to the imposition of this penalty, highlighting the importance of maintaining decorum and respecting the authority of match officials in international cricket.

Pooran has smoked this for a maximum over deep midwicket after Chakravarthy made a rank full toss. In 13.1 overs, LSG reached 100. Pooran isn’t really making much of a connection when Chakravarthy throws the ball wide outside of him. Chakravarthy crosses him again, and he misses another cut.
