BCCI Fines Ruturaj Gaikwad and KL Rahul for Over Rate Violations in LSG vs CSK IPL 2024 Clash

The heat is on and the stakes are higher as the IPL 2024 nears its conclusion and teams compete for a postseason berth. Teams can be evaluated according to how long it takes them to finish an over. Similar to sixes in a T20 match, overrate offenses have become commonplace. There was no exception in the Chennai Super Kings vs. Lucknow Super Giants IPL 2024 game on Friday at Ekana Stadium. In a sense, it was. This season’s opening IPL match saw both clubs fail to meet the required overrate. The leaders of the Lucknow Super Giants and Chennai Super Kings, KL Rahul of LSG and Ruturaj Gaikwad of CSK, were disciplined by the BCCI after it was determined that they had maintained a sluggish overrate.

“KL Rahul, the captain of the Lucknow Super Giants, has been punished for the sluggish over-rate his side maintained against the Chennai Super Kings in Match 34 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. Rahul received a 12 lakh rupee punishment, as per the BCCI, because it was his team’s first offense of the season about minimum over-rate offenses under the IPL Code of Conduct. The amount that KL Rahul will be penalized for is difficult to predict, especially considering that the sanction was imposed just hours after he was named Player of the Match for leading his team to a convincing 8-wicket victory over CSK. LSG managed to complete the 177-run mark in 19 overs with 8 wickets in the bank thanks to Rahul’s 82 off 53 balls and his greatest opening partnership of this year’s IPL with Quinton de Kock of South Africa (54 off 43).

They might have preferred to terminate the game a few overs sooner on another day, but it’s still honoring a renowned player in the opposition camp by taking a reasonably easy victory where the home crowd went yellow in honor of MS Dhoni. Nevertheless, CSK skipper Ruturaj is an exception to this rule. The right-hander, who has taken to batting at No. 3 following a lackluster few performances at the top of the order, received the news of the ₹12 lakh fine for the slow overrate offense almost simultaneously with his teammate Rahul. However, the fact that CSK finished second and his bat was silent makes it more plausible that it damaged him. With 13 balls, Gaikwad scored 17 runs.
