Pakistan Election Results: Strong Performance by Independents Tied to Jailed Imran Khan’s PTI – Latest Updates

In the initial tallies of the Pakistan election 2024, independent candidates associated with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), the jailed former prime minister Imran Khan’s political party, were surpassing expectations on Friday. This was due to a protracted wait in the results, which compounded allegations of electoral crimes and manipulation. The PTI party led by Imran Khan was not allowed to run in the election together on Thursday; nonetheless, unofficial results released by local television networks indicated that independent candidates, some of whom were even endorsed by his party, were leading in the majority of the constituencies.

On election day, 266 seats are determined by direct voting, while 70 seats are reserved based on the relative strength of each party in Parliament. Voting in one seat in this year’s election was delayed because of a candidate’s passing. The party with the largest proportion of seats has the ability to create a coalition administration in the event that no party obtains an absolute majority.

  • The media tallies were dubbed “probably the biggest election upset in Pakistan’s political history” by Senator Mushahid Hussain, a member of Sharif’s party, in the previous fifty years.

Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif left the nation in October of last year and returned after four years of self-imposed exile abroad in order to escape serving jail time. He dismissed suggestions that his Pakistan Muslim League party might not gain a clear majority in Parliament on election day, projecting confidence and defiance. But by evening, there were fewer people and no celebrations outside his headquarters, changing the atmosphere.

Indian-origin student at Princeton arrested for participating in a pro-Palestine protest, barred from the university

Achinthya Sivalingan, an Indian-origin student, was one of two students arrested Thursday at Princeton University in the United States for engaging in a pro-Palestine protest on campus.

Sivalingan and Hassan Sayed, both from Coimbatore, were arrested early Thursday morning as student protesters set up tents in the university courtyard, according to the Princeton Alumni Weekly.

“According to a paper provided by demonstrators, the arrested students are Achinthya Sivalingam and Hassan Sayed. Urvi, a first-year Ph.D. student who only wanted to be named by her first name, described the arrest as “violent” and claimed zip ties were placed around their wrists, according to the college alumni magazine.

ARRESTED FOR TRESPASSING
In a statement, Jennifer Morrill, a spokesperson for the University, noted that erecting tents violated University regulations, resulting to the arrest of the two students for trespassing “[a]fter repeated warnings from the Department of Public Safety to cease the activity and leave the area.”

Additionally, Morrill stated that Sivalingan and Sayed “have been immediately barred from campus, pending a disciplinary process.” She added that the remaining tents were “voluntarily taken down by protestors.”

Sivalingam is pursuing a Master of Public Affairs (MPA) in International Development at Princeton, while Sayed is a fifth-year PhD candidate in the famed university’s economics department.

SIVALINGAM AND SAYS ‘NOT EVICTED’

According to The Daily Princetonian, student organizers have circulated an Instagram document urging alumni and other university members to call and email the University to stop disciplinary actions, claiming that Sivalingam and Sayed were removed from their campus housing and given only five minutes to collect their belongings.

However, in a statement, university spokesperson Michael Hotchkiss emphasized that no one has been ‘evicted’.

“No one has been ‘evicted’ from the university today. Under University protocol, Public Safety may initially accompany students barred from campus (for any reason) to their University housing to collect whatever belongings they require in the short term until the specific terms of their bar from campus are determined by the designated administrator,” Hotchkiss stated.

He went on to state, “Those who were banished from the primary campus nowadays are allowed to remain in their university-owned lodging, as the assigned chairman chose that their bar did not apply to their non-dormitory residences.”

Varun Gandhi rejects the BJP’s offer to fight from Rae Bareli after considering it for more than a week

Varun Gandhi, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) pioneer and cousin of Congress pioneers Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi, is said to have turned down an offer from his party to run for Lok Sabha from Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh. This place is respected as a Gandhi family fortress, with Sonia Gandhi and Indira Gandhi having already won it.

The welcome to Varun Gandhi came after the hypothesis that Priyanka Gandhi might run from Rae Bareli. Varun Gandhi, who was evacuated from his Pilibhit situate, took time to mull over the offer, recently declining it, claiming a wish to maintain a strategic distance from an individual and a divisive decision campaign.

The BJP had trusted Varun Gandhi would acknowledge the offer, given his family’s history with the situation. His mother, Maneka Gandhi, had challenged Rajiv Gandhi in 1984. In any case, Varun Gandhi’s choice not to challenge has left the BJP without a candidate for Rae Bareli.

The Congress, on the other hand, has not yet reported its candidates for Rae Bareli or Amethi. The party’s hold over Rae Bareli has been debilitating, with declining vote offers in later races in spite of progressive wins. This has raised concerns for the Congress, particularly with compelling neighborhood pioneers like Rae Bareli joining the BJP.
