Delhi Capitals Coaching Staff to Undergo Changes After IPL Season; Ponting’s Future in Doubt

Delhi Capitals’ coaching staff is likely to be much leaner next season with the team’s poor performance in the ongoing IPL resulting in heads possibly rolling. While nothing will happen mid-season, co-owners JSW and GMR will likely take stock of the situation at the end of the season. Head coach Ricky Ponting’s future will also be examined at that time.

DC has already lost five games in a row, and unless they win against Kolkata Knight Riders on Thursday, they will be the first team out of playoff contention with six defeats. The coaching staff currently includes Sourav Ganguly as Director of Cricket, Ponting (head coach), James Hopes, Ajit Agarkar, Shane Watson, Pravin Amre, and Biju George as assistant coaches. However, they are unlikely to have such a large team next season.

The DC team has lost key players such as Shikhar Dhawan, Shimron Hetmyer, Marcus Stoinis, and Kagiso Rabada after the mega auction, affecting the team’s performance. In the next game, out-of-form opener Prithvi Shaw may be replaced by Sarfaraz Khan, but he will have to face the pace of Lockie Ferguson in the powerplay. All-rounder Mitchell Marsh, highly successful in the ODI series against India, has not been in form, and Rilee Rossouw or Rovman Powell may replace him in the playing XI for the next game on April 20.

Overall, the aim for this season is to salvage pride and finish on a respectable note as the men who matter in the DC franchise have already understood. The team has a formidable lineup with the likes of Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer, and R Ashwin, among others, but they will need to improve their performance to make it to the playoffs.
