IPL Introduces Smart Replay System for Faster and More Accurate Reviews

This season, the IPL will debut the Smart Replay System, which will improve decision-making speed and accuracy. According to information obtained by Reports, the TV umpire will be able to view footage taken by eight of Hawk-Eye’s high-speed cameras located across the field directly through two Hawk-Eye operators who will be seated in the same room as the umpire. Under the new arrangement, the TV broadcast director—who up until now served as a liaison between the Hawk-Eye operators and the third umpire—will not be involved.

It is claimed that the TV umpire will have access to more visuals—including split-screen images—than he did in the past thanks to the Smart Replay System. Consider the fielder on the boundary rope making an overhead catch in midair. A split screen of the fielder’s feet and hands at the exact instant the ball was caught was previously unavailable to the broadcaster. With the new setup, synchronized video of the moment the foot contacted or avoided the rope may be shown on a split screen with the umpire calling the ball’s catch or release.

Eight Hawk-Eye cameras are present at every match: two on each side of the square leg and two on each side of the pitch along the straight boundaries. Prior to IPL 2023, ball tracking and Ultra Edge were the primary uses for Hawk-Eye cameras. Therefore, for any on-field referral, the broadcaster mostly used footage from their own cameras, with the exception of inspections for lbws and edges. Referrals for stumpings, run-outs, catches, and overthrows were included in that.

Improving Decision-Making with Smart Review System in Cricket

When a stumping referral occurs, the TV umpire will request to see the split screen from the Hawk-Eye operators via the Smart Review System. He will assess the side-on review for the stumping immediately rather than requesting the Ultra Edge to determine whether the ball was caught behind if there was a discernible gap when it passed the bat. The TV umpire will only use Ultra Edge if he observes a clear deflection of the ball off the bat or pad or if he fails to observe a clear space between the bat and ball. The new technology will display TV umpire tri-vision for stumpings, which is effectively video from both side-on and front-on cameras in a single frame.

A comparable referral procedure was previously tested by the ECB in the Hundred. Selected umpires attended a two-day session on the new system held in Mumbai on Sunday and Monday by the BCCI. It has been reported that during IPL 2024, which begins on March 22, approximately 15 umpires—including both Indian and foreign umpires—will use the Smart Replay System.
