BCCI Secretary Jay Shah Unveils Test Cricket Incentive Scheme, Offering Rohit, Kohli, and Test Stars a Yearly ₹3.15 Crore Bonus
The BCCI secretary, Jay Shah, unveiled the ‘Test Cricket Incentive Scheme’, an extra reward structure on top of the existing match fee, minutes after India defeated England by innings and 64 runs in the fifth and final Test match at Dharamsala to complete a 4-1 thrashing. I am happy to inform you that the ‘Test Cricket Incentive Scheme’ for Senior Men has begun. This initiative aims to give our respected players stability and financial progress. Aside from the current match price for Test matches, which is set at INR 15 lakhs, the ‘Test Cricket Incentive Scheme’ will function as an extra reward system starting with the 2022–2023 season, Shah said on X (previously Twitter).
The players who consistently play for India in the Test squad and XI will profit from the new program. Cricket players who maintain their fitness and are available for over half of India’s Test matches in a given year would receive ₹15 lakh more every Test simply for being on the team. Players who participate in more than half of India’s Test matches annually are paid ₹30 lakh per game. If a cricket player participates in more than 75% of India’s Test matches in a given year, the sum rises even higher. In each test, members of the squad would receive ₹22.5 lakh, while members of the XI would receive ₹45 lakh.
To ease the situation, Test regulars like skipper Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja, and R Ashwin stand to earn an extra ₹3.15 crore in addition to the standard ₹15 lakh per match if they play at least 7 Tests in a year when India plays 9. The board’s decision to preserve and value the game’s original format is evident in this action. The Indian Premier League (IPL) has become more popular among players than red-ball cricket; hence, the board has recently encouraged players to play more Test cricket, whether it be at the national or international level.

Shah stated earlier in February that there is a trend that has begun to emerge and should be taken seriously. Unexpectedly, several players now seem to place a higher emphasis on the IPL than on regional cricket. The foundation of Indian cricket has always been domestic cricket, which has never been underestimated in our vision for the game. The BCCI secretary went on to say that the board’s initial goal was for anyone who wanted to play for India to first play domestic cricket. It is critical to recognize that domestic cricket serves as Team India’s feeder system and the cornerstone of Indian cricket. Our objective for Indian cricket has always been clear: a cricketer must first establish themselves in their nation to play for India. Participation in domestic cricket competitions is still a crucial criterion for selection, and missing out on them would have serious repercussions,” the speaker continued.
