Vidya Balan: Khans Unlikely to Portray Gay Man Like Mammootty in Kaathal, Says ‘Quite Impossible Here
Vidya Balan: Khans Unlikely to Portray Gay Man Like Mammootty in Kaathal, Says ‘Quite Impossible Here
Vidya Balan believes that no major Bollywood celebrity, especially one of the Khans, will portray a gay man, unlike Malayalam actor Mammootty in Jeo Baby’s Kaathal: The Core last year. Vidya clarified why it’s “quite impossible” for things to occur on the podcast Unfiltered with Samdish.
What Vidya said
“We have to acknowledge Keralans are a more literate audience. That is quite a distinction. Kerala has a very distinct lowest common denominator feel. I’m not devaluing what he (Mammootty) accomplished. However, it might be a little simpler there. It’s a mirror of his culture. They would probably be more receptive to anything like this. And they have the same reverence for their actors as the South has. They adore them, particularly the big-name male performers. Thus, the fact that he actually followed through is all the more admirable. He didn’t anticipate it being seen as a critique of my machismo. He’s a performer who exudes confidence,” Vidya remarked.
Vidya claimed to have messaged Dulquer Salmaan after seeing Kaathal: The Core to express her admiration for his legendary father. There isn’t, in my opinion, a greater demonstration of acceptance or support for the community than the biggest star in Malayalam cinema producing it in addition to acting in it and encouraging others to do the same. Vidya continued, “Unfortunately, I don’t think any of our Hindi stars could tackle a film like Kaathal. She did, however, express hope that the next generation will dispel this belief. She followed in the footsteps of Ayushmann Khurrana, who portrayed a gay man in Hitesh Kewalya’s romantic comedy Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan, released in 2020.
